Welcome

Susan Dunker's paintings embody colors of creation, liveliness, excitement, provocation, as though they are lit for the first time by the dawn. Animal, floral and landscape motifs utilize vibrant color intensity, amplifying volume in such a way you feel each piece pulsating with visual activity.

The Kern Plateau

A scene near Lake Isabella, this piece is one of the first oil paintings the artist implemented the use her "open color" technique that she employs in all her pastels.

Haybales Along I-5

The frequent drive through Arvin and all the dairies and fields south of bakersfield inspired Haybales Along I-5. The artist had a lot of fun with the perspective, rendering the bale in the foreground.

Four Red Two Lips

This painting is part of a floral series called Floravision, which was shown in the Maestri Gallery in Bakersfield.

Susan Dunker

While studying Art History, Susan became familiarized with various art movements of the early 20th century, including the Post-Impressionists, French Fauves and Nabis.

Susan discovered a natural predilection to the French Fauve style, which encouraged freedom in the use of bold, vivid colors and brash brush work.

Cactus Flower

"Cactus Flower is a very large piece done on a special board coated with a heavy pumice, giving it great texture. The background is a gold acrylic paint, with real flakes of gold. The texture of the board also dictated a simpler treatment of the cactus flower."
